I found a patch that will allow the Direct IM menu for Oscar (AIM) protocol to be context-based i.e. switch it to "disconnect direct IM" when connected directly. This is needed because if direct connection is left idle or simply exists for too long even when not idle, messages between users will begin to be dropped, and currently the only way to close a direct IM in Pidgin is to close the entire conversation.
Unfortunately the file is a .patch file and I have no idea how to use this with the Windows client of Pidgin.

Where did you find this patch? And you can't use the patch with the pidgin .exe file, you would need to build pidgin from source to apply it.
