Reading through the docs, it seems you need to have an existing account with an IM service like Yahoo, to use Pidgin.
Can Pidgin be used as a standalone IM tool?
Can Pidgin have its own member db?
For example, I have a php / mysql site with lots of members, and wouild like to offer Pidgin for download, and enable single sign on to Pidgin and my site.
Also, have their buddy lists on the site displayed in Pidgin, and the members clubs as chatroom.
Is this possible?
Thanks,
Gyuri

pidgin is an IM client not an IM service, as such it has no server parts, people can't connect to it and it can't offer any IM capabilities to people. If you want a local server set up a jabber server and then pidgin can connect to the just fine.

Thanks Guys for the explanation! I sort of starting to have a clear picture now of this project :)
I found meanwhile Userplane's Presence Application, which is sg that I am aiming for, although that is not free above 100 simultaneous connections.
I run some social networking sites, and we would like to implement something liek MSN messenger, that links back to the web where users can upload photos and such.
Creating a protocol is not a trivial thing to do, even less so if you intend for it to scale and be usable by large numbers of people. Above and beyond writing the protocol itself, writing the server is not a trivial amount of work either. So while gyuri79 could certainly do both of those his best bet (assuming he doesn't already have a protocol he intends to use) would be just to set up a jabber server and be done. If he wants to release a 'branded' pidgin protocol plugin for his server he can.

Thanks for the exlanations
Well, you could write a protocol plugin that interfaced with your site, so your plan is quite feasible.
