When I log in using Gaim, are my passwords being sent across the network in clear text?
I don't mean that they are stored in clear text in the account.xml file - I know that. I'm talking about sending it to the services (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc.).
Is it different for each service?
It's different for each protocol. Offhand I can't think of any one that sends the password in clear text. Most send some sort of hash of the password. But it depends on what the protocol wants.
Thanks Tim for the info.
Do you know if using Gaim versus the native clients is any more or less secure, when it comes to sending passwords? Or, is it exactly the same?
