You don't actually have to have 2.10.6 - 2.6.10 or newer will work.
However, there is a bug in the installer that will force you to have 2.10.6 installed.
You can get around it by modifying the following registry key to trick the installer about the installed GTK version:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GTK\2.0\Version
Set it to 2.10.6 before running the installer, then you can set it back to 2.6.10 afterward.

The theme selection by the installer will still not work.
The solution to the problem where the GTK+ theme is not working for older GTK+ runtimes after installing 2.0.0beta4 is to delete %APPDATA%\..\.gtkrc-2.0

Is gtk+ 2.10.6 really required for beta4 or can I use any earlier gtk versions? I prefer 2.6.x fine right now...
Are there any commands for the installer executable to specify the gtk+ location?

Would this be fixed in 2.0.0beta5 and when approximately can we expect it to be released?
If you do this, does it still allow you to use the Wimp theme or does it revert to the no-theme appearance?
