How to install the mac version of the PictureMetaDataWorkplace?

Here I descibe the version 3.0. You really need Java 17. Newer version should work also.
For version 2.5/2.6/2.7 you only need Java 11!
For version 2.3 you only need Java 8

  • One pre-requisite of PicMeta is a Java 17 Runtime Environment.
  • Since Oracle has changed the java policy, you might find your java here: https://adoptium.net/de/temurin/releases
  • You'll need the "mac osx x64" version with the HotSpot JVM.
  • If there is no jre (runtime version) choose the jdk (development kit). I tested it with the jdk.
  • The Mac Intel version of PicMeta version might run with the silicon processor . Maybe there is a problem with the swt.jar file. Search the internet for help, if you like to use silicon processor.
  • After that please get the ExifTool from Sourceforge. Search for "exiftool".
  • I use version 12.78 at the moment but newer version should also work.
  • After installing the ExifTool open a "Terminal" and type in: which exiftool.
  • Answer should be: /usr/local/bin/exiftool.
  • Download PicMeta from here and move the App to the program folder. If it doesn't start, you should open the system settings and click on security there. Here you are able to allow the program start. This must be done the first time you start PicMeta.
  • Go to "properties" in the PicMeta App. If you doesn't know where to find the Adobe PSE Organizer Database then type in (replace <your_username> with your user name):
    /Users/<your_username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs</your_username></your_username>
  • Click on "...". Somewhere deeper you'll find the database called "catalog.pse24db". That's the default place. Maybe your database is somewhere else, then you should know where to find it.
  • Click on the database file, then open and save the settings.
  • You should set your eMail address in the settings on locations tab. Otherwise you might get an error 403 or 429 when collecting data or map tiles from OpenStreetMap. The eMail address is only send to OSM. See also https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Nominatim

How to install the windows version of the PictureMetaDataWorkplace?

  • One pre-requisite of PicMeta is a Java 17 Runtime Environment. You might get it from here: https://adoptium.net/de/temurin/releases
  • Choose the 64bit version for Windows with 64 bit (recommended) .
  • If there is no jre (runtime version) choose the jdk (development kit). I tested it with the jdk.
  • Create a folder "c:\apps\PicMeta". That's the place where you should unzip the PicMeta software.
  • The Win 64 of PicMeta version might run under Win 32. Maybe there is a problem with the swt.jar file. Search the internet for help, if you like to use Win32.
  • Create a link to the picmeta.exe and place the link on your desktop.
  • From version 2.5 on ".exe" is just a starter for the batch file. You might also just use the batch, but then you haven't the funny icon. Maybe you have to edit the ".bat" and enter the correct path to your jdk installation.
  • You do not need to install the exiftool, because this tool is included. If you like to replace the exiftool, you must rename the new "exiftool(-k).exe" to exiftool.exe
  • Go to "properties" in the PicMeta App. If you doesn't know where to find the Adobe PSE Organizer Database then type in:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs
  • Click on "...". Somewhere deeper you'll find the database called "catalog.pse24db". That's the default place. Maybe your database is somewhere else, then you should know where to find it.
  • Click on the database file, then open and save the settings.
  • You should set your eMail address in the settings on locations tab. Otherwise you might get an error 403 or 429 when collecting data or map from OpenStreetMap. The eMail address is only send to OSM. See also https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Nominatim
