I would like to see in development a _REAL_ opt-in newsletter module, one that will email the latest news stories posted in plain text or html format (preferably plain text--hate html email) in digest or a "take it as it comes" style.  That way users could get all of the news stories posted on the site in their inbox.  Something similar to what Lockergnome has, comes to mind immediately.  Preferably, support for the addition of text ads and links and relevant footer information would also be quite useful.  This would allow people to keep current on the happenings at your site while at work.  While many businesses may allow the reading of email, most frown on outright browsing while on the clock.  It just stuck me as wierd that the lack of this functionality hasn't crossed anyone else's mind in what is basically portal software.

I think this is really a request for an upgrade to Forum, isn't it?

Adding opt-in notification to Forum in two formats: 1) watching a specific thread/topic 2) watching a forum/category. Notification should be configurable for the admin to set notification either as just an e-mail notification or to forward the actual text, and to send immediately or daily, weekly, or monthly digests.
This would be a great upgrade, but there are some other things I'd like to see added first... like subtopics.

No, it doesn't have anything at all to do with the forum. I think what grim_thing means is a webmaster-initiated and -written announce via e-mail.

This, as an opt-in system, is what I'm looking for as well. I tried installing the newsletter module 1.12 but it doesn't install on my PWS 0.82, so I didn't get to try it out.

I get an "internal server error" message, and checking the code I noticed it doesn't conform with the other current modules in the initial section of the _setup.php. Not being a PHP coder, I can't
fix the problem. Anyone out there who can supply some help, or has an updated version available?

      Cool runnings,
      Zabonk

The newsletter module installed easily for me on my 0.8.2 installation (php 4.2.1, MySQL, Apache, virtual hosted), and I don't recall any particular issues. I haven't had time to actually implement it well... Just a very occasional posting of important upcoming events.

Not a 'grammer myself, but would be glad to try to help if you want to try it again.
