A feature I would like to see is the ability to
categorise forums. e.g have a main category like
distributions, and then have sub forums like redhat,
mandrake, suse within that category so that you can
have multiple forums without cluttering up the main
page with 20-30 forums.

Changing summary to more familiar term of "sub-forums".
"Categories" makes me think of FatCat.

Couldn't you do this with fatcat anyway?
At the moment each forum can have a fatcat category assigned to it.
What guardian is asking for is essentially a category view like in
announce, faq or linkman.
It perhaps might need to be more forum like in layout but that's just
templating.

I think having true sub-forums would be a huge pain in the
ass and not really that beneficial, if you ask me.
I agree with singletrack that you could just group the
forums into categories, and then I could organize those like
you see at http://forums.gentoo.org.
Let me know what you think.

I was just going to post an RFE about this. I'd like to be able to
group the forums by catagory. I've assigned catagories to the
forums, but just can't find a way to have a page where they are
listed by catagory. Is this possible?

For some sites, this would probably work with categories. On
my site it wouldn't. I've hacked together 'Folders', its
working but I'm not too happy with my hack.
Maybe that hack could somehow get "smoothened", with a nice
front end to it? And maybe we could introduce a "use
categories", "use folders", "don't use either" switch?
It would also be nice, if the cookiecrumb could reflect the
current folder, users could be limited to certain folders
(view / posting) and user could click on the folder name to
only see the forums contained within.
my hack is available at
http://www.kiesler.at/article140.html and can be seen in
action at my forums
(http://www.kiesler.at/index.php?module=phpwsbb&PHPWSBB_MAN_OP=list).
