I had some problems with installing PhpWiki, so I went to the wiki at the PhpWiki homepage to find out what to do. I went to the FAQ, found that others also had the problem, but the answer given didn't work. I thought it would be a good idea to mention that right there in the wiki, so I tried to edit the page. It wouldn't let me, saying that my privilege level wasn't high enough. So then I tried the SandBox. Couldn't edit anything there either. What's the deal? I then tried "signing in" using the edit control on the lower right of the first page. Still couldn't edit anything, even the SandBox. Seems to me like something's wrong with the wiki at http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki. What do I need to do to get high enough privilege to contribute to this wiki? - Bill Thoen |

What I found is that I was able to log in, and able to edit the page. However, the site was SO SLOW that it was torture. I essentially had to do something else between clicks. I believe this slowness is why my edits look like they didn't take (!). If you look at the page source, I moved "PhpWikiDocumentation" down to the bottom, but the page itself still does not show that change visibly. Perhaps this happened to Bill? Anyway, what do we think of moving the SourceForge Phpwiki to a non-SourceForge machine that actually has a few cycles, and redirecting the traffic? If that sounds good, does anyone have a machine available? Dan |

Actually, the problem was that I had blocked cookies, and even if you sign in using a WikiWord name, if you don't allow cookies, you lose. Anonymous users cannot edit anything, but if you sign in as NoahBody or AnonYmous, and accept cookies, you can still be "anonymous" and run amok. The server really was crawling and gasping at times yesterday. If I hadn't already seen how an unencumbered wiki works, I would have had my doubts about the software. Maybe the demo site really ought to be on a zippier host. - BillThoen |

If that sounds good, does anyone have a machine available? We should rather try dba instead. First dba is much faster anyway, and second sf.net is incredibly slow with mysql with its thousands of webhosts using mysql and its stupid blocking mechanism. -- Reini Urban http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/~rurban/ |
