Binary data can be a pain no matter what.  If the connection to the DB
goes through a driver (ODBC) or other proxy, then Binary data is one
more hurdle.

1.3.4 I got working because dbm support was so broken.

#2.  #1 will not work on many installations out there, and one more
dependency is a pain.  Also as mentioned above, it will work with driver
and things like pgaccess/phpMyAdmin without upgrading.
