one thing i thought of when dealing with [bracketed phrases] is that 
there are many (though certainly not all) cases where other instances 
of bracketed phrases don't link..

  it occurred to me that i could do a search for each bracketed phrase 
and use that to, by hand, bracket the appropriate ones, but there must 
be some better way to go about this.  perhaps a semi-automated plugin 
(for admin only?) which brings up a queue of possible matches which 
then get marked as yes (link them) or no (leave them as they are).  has 
this been tried before?
