and i'm not sure how much of a "real world" problem this is.  the
personal telco wiki is moderately busy:

and i can count on one hand the number of times i've had to backup and
merge changes by hand in over a year.

also busier sites tend to have more pages which also distributes the
edits.

i'm not saying that the comments aren't valid, if you're consistantly
seeing multiple edits a minute on a single page it would be a major pain
but that i'm not sure any wiki has ever gotten that popular. :)
