I'm sorry this response is so late.  I was away on holiday when your
posted your message.

There are (or at least were,) at least two other French translation
efforts underway.  I don't know much about the status of the other
efforts, but I've created a wiki-page with what I know:

(I've CC:ed the other French translators on this message, so you can pick
their e-mail addresses out of the mail headers.)
