Steve, Vergleichen means "to compare". <http://dict.leo.org/?search=vergleichen> The abbreviated form "vgl." looks a little odd to me too, but that may just be my problem because I'm not very familiar with many german abbreviations. I'm not happy with the word diff either, for the same unix-ish reason as you mention. I have already changed the German strings back to diff until we come up with something else.
