Gabber is the most actively developed OSS Jabber client, but is
(unfortunately) heavily Gnome oriented.  Jarl is a CLI and Perl/TK
cleitn that is essentially trivially self-installing.  Not fully
featured, but works reliably here.

Then there's things like EveryBuddy which have Jabber compatability.
