This rules out straight .Z and .gz. Tar the .gz is fine. I was thinking that zip would be the most portable, so I started looking into the format. There are CRC32 checksums in the file headers --- I suspect these will be expensive to compute in PHP, as AFAIK, there is no built-in function to do it. So now I'm looking at the tar file format, which is looking much more straightforward to implement --- I think I'll start with that. Jeff. |
