[Phpwiki-talk] 1.3.4 + mysql install problem

just installed phpWiki 1.3.4 with MySQL, as per the INSTALL.mysql file. 
 Created the db
and used the schema to create the empty tables.  created mysql user 
phpwiki with the required GRANTS as per the doc.   So far so good.  Here 
is what I get when I try to open the page on localhost:  

lib/WikiDB/backend/PearDB.php:681: Fatal[256]: wikidb_backend_mysql: 
fatal database error

    * DB Error: syntax error
