I was wondering if the difference engine of phpWiki could be released separately from the rest of the software, so that otherse can use it in their own software. If not that, maybe someone could provide a reference that lets me know how to use it for my own website.

See mediawiki. They use it also.
Since phpwiki is class based, some other classes may be useful also.
I started off at Mediawiki, and they recommended that I come here instead, as they took the code from phpWiki.
