Line 539 in config-dist.ini in 1.3.10 is currently:

; DBAUTH_AUTH_CHECK = "SELECT password FROM user where
userid='$userid'"

It should probably be:

; DBAUTH_AUTH_CHECK = "SELECT PASSWORD(passwd) FROM
user where userid='$userid'"

There is no password field in the user table.

    I don't know much about the format of the config.ini file.
    However, it seems like several sql-statements are not
    enclosed in quotes. See for example lines 564-5.
    Uncommenting these lines causes the rest of the ini file to
    be ignored.

    This line is only an example for External DB Auth, not
    necesserely against the phpwiki.user table.

    But I fixed it nevertheless. The missing quotes also.
