I've committed a patch to CVS HEAD to use the 'whois-servers.net' lookup method, instead of the maintability nightmare that is (was?) servers.whois. Please check it out. Works fine for me except for domains that use 'gtld.whois', which appears to be throwing up all kinds of warnings. I'll look into that seperately if nobody else beats me to it.
