Greg,
I would recommend using the Item class but not the Manager. Instead
of Manager check out the List class in the core. This class is much
easier to use and more flexible. Write your own manager class which
will control all your lists and items. You could even have one manager
that controls a bunch of sub-managers, the are many possibile solutions
all depending on how you would like your code to be structured. The
documents module implements both Item and List without extending the
core Manager class. Altough it only implements 2 items you may be able
to get some ideas from it. Hope this helps. Feel free to email the
