Hi everybody! First the work: I committed the new source code comments, since no one really objected. I hope I didn't break anything on your side (e.g. you had to fix a lot of conflicts) by doing that. In the future please comment the source files as you write them (or change them) to keep the generated documentation up-to-date (of course I will keep an eye on that, too). I will run PHPDoc on the sources (probably weekly) and put the results on http://www.k-fish.de/krabutzig/phpwebsite/ There will be the other parts of the developer docs as well, although I put them in CVS as well. (Read: Charlie Shi, we can start working now...). I will add a short introduction to PHPDoc comments sometime next week. -------------------------- Now for something completely different: Who am I? My Name is Karsten Dambekalns (that's a latvian name - got it from my wife), I live in Germany and co-own a small business (http://www.fishfarm.de/ - take the design with a grain of salt, we are working on it) working on dynamic web solutions. We do (almost) all of our stuff with the help of PHP. I stumbled over phpWebSite mostly by accident, but was immediately attracted to it, mostly because I see a very good base in it. I would like to improve it in such a way that I can honestly recommend it to our customers (that's were my motivation comes from, mostly, apart from the developers being very friendly and open!). My (immediate) goals are: Create/improve documentation (no! really? :), help eliminate redundancies and improve theme code (!). Thats it for now, you all have other mails to read I guess! Regards, Karsten --=20 Why do we have to hide from the police, daddy? Because we use emacs, son. Here's what is needed (IMHO): A read-write for developers, read-only for general community list - to discuss logistics, scheduling, bug fixes, etc. This would allow the entire community to know what is going on without diluting the content. A public list for development issues so that the development team can benefit from the suggestions of the entire community. Development issues of a sensitive nature can be handled via email -- after all there are only about 10 people with CVS access. Jeremy,
The SF task manager provides these functions:
* Subprojects allow for grouping of task type, and can be private
or public
* Multiple developers can be assigned to a task
* Start dates, end dates, dependencies, and priorities
* Assigned tasks are displayed on a developers SF personal page
* Email is sent to all assigned developers when changes are made
* Report generation

Forum would be cool because we could lock it down to just the developers being able to see and access it altogether. While this is NOT a solution to the phpWS's problem with theme flexibility,
it's cleaner than creating new functions that basically do the same thing...
everything in phpWS is contained in the same "box" structure, so why
not just pass the style class rules as arguments... hopefully this will
lead in a better direction for themes ;o)
function themesidebox($title, $content, $bgClassname, $titleClassname,
$contentClassname)
{
include("config.php");
echo "
<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\"
summary=\"Border for Generic Block\">
<tr>
<td class=\"$bgClassname\">
<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"3\"
summary=\"Data for Generic Block\">
<tr>
<td class=\"$titleClassname\">$title
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class=\"$contentClassname\">$content
</td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> <br /> ";
}

Hello: I am new to phpWebSite and to this list, so, please excuse any redundancy with previous postings. Also, let me state that I am VERY EXCITED about the prospects for phpWebSite! I'm currently using phpNuke for several websites that I host. But, I'm not satisfied with phpNuke for several reasons: The system seems to be a bunch of stuff grafted together without much thought as to design, feature interaction, or, coding technique. (I've been able to follow the code just fine and have made numerous small enhancements to support my customers without problems and without breaking things (which is a common complaint with phpNuke). The developer has done a good job, but isn't interested in a collective development effort. I've POLITELY asked questions or made comments on the php-Nuke site and have been insulted and abused by people apparently have nothing better to do than review everything posted on the site so that they can hold people accountable for their ignorance. I've found the same to be true to a lesser degree at the NukeAddon site, as well. I'm not interested in participating in a community that is based on one-upsmanship instead of helpfulness and cooperation. Let me state that I have not downloaded the phpWebSite code to look at it. Although, given the discussion I've seen on the website, I don't have to look at the code to know that more attention is being paid to design and coding then is the case with phpNuke. Here are a few questions: What techniques are being used to model phpWebSite? Is the work product of this modeling available for review somewhere? Are there published standards for calling functions and classes, physical organization of functions and classes into source code files, or function, class and variable naming conventions? Here's the real question: given that many different people will be working on different areas of the system, what is being done to insure that the coding will be uniform across the entire system? Who is responsible for the project at Appalachian State? Is this a project run by students who will graduate and leave the project without a rudder? Now, having played with the demo site, here are some immediate concerns/kudos: The news pages have Topics. The calendar has Topics and Sub-Topics which are not related to the news Topics. I'm wondering why every part of the website (forums, news, calendar, links, etc. wouldn't use the same set of topics and sub-topics? I haven't modeled this to see exactly what that would look like, but... I like the way the independent pages are setup. This is a huge improvemnt over the phpNuke Sections! I also like the Administration system. But, the system suffers from a deficiency in phpNuke: I found that when I was doing Administrative tasks, when I hit the "process" button, I didn't come back to a place that allowed me to continue working. So, I had to navigate around to get back to where I was. The menuing system is great! But, there is no way to setup a page of news stories on a particular topic and put it in the menu. Take a look at: http://www.actionagenda.com/categories.php?op=newindex&catid=7 This is essentially a Home page for a particular topic. (Note: "Politics" is listed in the Categories Menu on the right. It could have been, but isn't listed in the Main Menu on the left.) I'm also concerned about a few other issues: Do you have planned the ability to setup administrators to manage a particular topic or area of a phpWebSite site? This is a critical requirement for me. Is there a master plan somewhere that gives an idea of what plug-in components are planned and when they might be implemented? A little about themes... The header.php file in the root pretty much just checks cookies, then loads the appropriate theme from the themes/ directory. As for the the themes directory itself: themes.php creates the boxes. That is why there are so many different theme functions. We wanted users to have the ability to form them however they want. header.php is more general. It controls the layout of the page, not the individual boxes. Just so you know, we aren't thrilled about the way it works currently. There are too many files (two really but that is still too much =). I would like there to be just ONE file that is edited for a theme. However, the engine needs to be flexible enough to handle anything the designer can dream up while editing that one file. Even better would be menu driven theming, and I think we should be able to get there. In any case, ideas are welcome. Keep in mind however, that we want to allow legacy themes as much as possible. We don't want to have to include upgrading theme info with every install. I think that would drive people away. Calendar... I am expecting few improvements to the current calendar system. I hate to say it but it is in a pretty much in an "as is" state. However, keep in mind that I am rewriting the calendar as we speak. So far it is looking better (I can't believe how sloppy I coded). I will CVS a copy soon so y'all can poke at it with a stick. The best part is that it will be our first "official" plug-in, so it should be interesting. Real quick... "I want to take this a step further than PHP-Nuke and have the actual news feed stored in a table and not in a cache file" Excellent. That is how weather works. whosonline I've got it installed on my test site. We'll get it to the download section. Best regards, Matthew McNaney |

Hi everybody. I did a quick revision of some typos and added the german translation thanks to Chris :^) to a zip file on a website I manage. http://sntfreight.com/phpwhosonline/ Please check it out if you haven't fixed these errors yourself. I thought I would put it here so I can have more control of the changes. Sourceforge doesn't let me delete the files and don't want to keep sending files to the main site to find out I sent the wrong files. So get it here. Tat |

And now I'm editing theme for my site, and there is one qustions, is there any possibility to move line "Read More... | xxx bytes more | x comments" up to the bottom of the news window, i found that there isn't any sollution in the default theme. Of course i can do it by changing code in file public_html/index.php but in future i'll have conflicts connected with upgrading phpwebsite :( and so i'd better to do it only in /themes files, but how ? p.s. sorry for my bad english :) -- Best regards, Danik mailto:ro...@mo... |

Hi all! I noticed that people start to put comments into the code. Good! Notably adam put a lot of comments into the source about a week ago. But... I think it would be better to use hphdoc comments. For those not familiar with that: phpdoc is a project to automaticaly generate class and/or function documentation from source code. It is inspired by the javadoc tool, which is (anyone who used it will probably agree) just great. phpdoc is now part of PEAR so it can be found at cvs.php.net or in your distribution (not sure about that, though) of PHP. It's main website is www.phpdoc.de, which is fortunately available in english, despite the de cc. In short: I would be pleased to see phpdoc comments in the source files. maybe this will make generating an always up to date source documentation possible. The way I am doing/trying this now is a bit awkward :-/ Regards, Karsten --=20 Why do we have to hide from the police, daddy? Because we use emacs, son. I'm still tweaking and finalizing the features of the blocks right now. I need to add in the security part and other things too. The news feeds and plugins into the mix too. But if you want something where it only shows up for a certain page, if thats what your going for let me know. You can email me at cam...@xp..., I'm sort of taking requests for features on this before I declare it completed. |
