It would also be useful if we could find out from the DB class which  
DB we're using so that we can automatically use features of MySQL  
that aren't in PostgreSQL for instance, and even which version.

For instance I might want to use UPDATE LOW_PRIORITY for stats  
gathering which MySQL has but PostgreSQL doesn't. At the moment  
there's a config option in phpwsBB to select this.
