The first thing I would check is to see if you have php-mysql installed for Apache. I fought for hours one day to get config to work, but (oddly enough) it never did. I could connect to MySQL via CL and via MySQLcc, but not through phpWebSite. I installed php-mysql and VOILA! It wErked!
