[Phpwebsite-developers] Simple Module

I'm new to PHPWS, but I think what I am trying to accomplish is simple.

I  want a module that I can pass one or two options to.  The module will
then pull some data from mysql and display it in a table.

Before I re-invent the wheel, does this (or something similar) already
exist?  If not, is there a current module development howto?  I'm trying
to disect the Notes module as a learning exercise.
