I see no reason whatsoever why a mailing list would draw exposure away.

Partly due to the fact that the mails aren't threaded properly (note
that anything prepended by 'Re:' is marked as a separate thread) and
that the nature of the developer list is not based around discussion.
:-)

I've seen many mailing lists and newsgroups that spark plenty of
discussion. It's mainly due to the people frequenting them rather than
the medium itself. :-)

I'm not knocking the concept of forums as a whole, and I'm not
suggesting they be ditched. However, this thread has highlighted an
issue that people obviously feel strongly about.

The only thing I am advocating is that multiple points of access to the
same discussion will reach more people and encourage greater
participation.

If Phorum does indeed have an email interface (in fact, it appears to
have quite a well designed one with mailing list support), then there's
no reason why that cannot theoretically be tied into a mailing list
which can be tied into a newsgroup, thus catering for everyone :-)
