WDS recommended mmbase.org for our review.  WOW what a project !!!  Now I'm
certainly not advocating a switch to Java, but the class relationships are
very well thought out, as well as their object "services".  Many on the list
have already wanted to design plug-in modules that offer "services" to other
modules (such as email).  The mmbase.org model is one I am very impressed
with.

They have their own scripting language (like Cold Fusion) and many other
features that we wouldn't use in phpWebSite, however.  A mmbase developer
wrote his Master's thesis on how to integrate mmbase with Jini, which is at
the URL below in pdf format.  Chapter 3 of his thesis gives an excellent
overview of mmbase and how it builds object nodes and relationship nodes.
Overall an excellent paper.

Hopefully, these concepts will spark a brainstorm of how we can make
phpWebSite all we dream it can be.
