I'm not too familiar with CVS either, for that matter. Both easy to correct though. To clarify a bit, I tend to prefer working in a collaboration, as opposed to going off on something myself. Should I infer from your suggestion of a fork that these things aren't consistent with the plans for 5.3, or wouldn't merge well with it? (Yeah, I gotta re-visit 5.3) So far, my only involvement with Open/Free development was being a beta tester for Pan (cool newsreader, BTW). Not that I'm hesistant about contributing code, but maintaining a fork ... ??? Uh, I guess I'll pull out the Coriolis CVS book, and study sourceforge as well. Excellent descriptions of things TODO. I would suggest forking the CVS code at 0.5.2 though. Hack away, what's your sourceforge ID? jason "Jed S. I hope this weekend to have a look at PWL 5.3, and it's changelog. However, I'd like to present my wishlist as well. 1) Get rid of the story/summary seperation. I know, I can set the summary length to 0, except that when I do that, then the whole article gets stored in both the summary and content columns of the T_Stories table. I don't like to waste that storage space. I realize this could spell a bit more work in parsing the article, if there is also a desire to limit how much of it can get displayed on the main page. 2) If the above isn't feasible, then at least display both the summary and content on the stories page, when a specific article is being displayed. The content column often doesn't really hold up on it's own, without the summary piece, and the "Story Links" show up only with the summary, which is also not useful -- they should show up with the content of the article too. 3) Ability to have user accounts. I know, this is in PWL5.3. I tried 5.3 a while ago, and it wasn't working (or I couldn't get it to work). 4) The ability to have a "always on the main page" center block, which is displayed either at the top or bottom. Sort of the equivalent of a splash page, except it's in the content area. This would be useful for organizations which need/want to have some mostly constant stuff showing up on the main page. Yeah, I know this can be done by editing the header.tmpl file directly, for example. But I think it would be a good feature. 5) I recall the notes for 5.3 mentioning getting a more modular approach going. I think this is a good thing. I had a look at the code for phpnuke, or one of its offshoots, and it's module dispatch approach looked pretty good. I'll note that one of the things that got me to settle on PWL, instead of a nuke blog, was I couldn't seem to get the modules to get configured the way I wanted them. But such built-in extensibility will go a long way for easier evolution of PWL over time. No, I'm not saying it's a good thing for PWL to become yet another nuke look-alike. PWL already has an edge over them, with the web based configuration of theme items. 6) Ability to run more than one blog from the same copy of PWL. I think this could be done by changing the prefix for the tables (making it a config item). Yeah, I know, this means going through all the MySQL calls and changing them to append the prefix onto all the table names. But it would also make PWL more attractive to bloghosting companies. 7) It would be great if theming were more CSS oriented. I'm thinking maybe sticking the stylesheet template for each theme in the backend/themes/themename directory. I suppose some sort of a standard for class names would be needed, e.g. td.block, td.comment, td.article. 8) As I mentioned before, adding an XML-RPC ping to weblogs.com (or other target of blog-logging) whenever a new article is added (or other significant change?). Any thoughts on how easy/hard it would be to implement these things? Am I better off just hacking away, or do they fit into the desired direction of the community? Thanks all, for any input here. I would also like to see continued stabalization of pwl. Maybe even some festures added that don't require stucture changes, but more like the ability to send automated newsletters pulling story title, url and summary into a text file for pasting into a mailing list. The ability to manage left and right blocks as a whole without having to do html (that way each block isn't stuck to a certain format and images can be inserted between menus). Also, the ability to have a frontpage with the center column broken into many smaller boxes and subcatagories instead of just stories. Stuff like that. pwl works great as a news weblog without topics or the ability to make comments. Not much focus has been placed on that but there is a need out there for such a beast. pwl already has most of the features needed. Kinda a phpnewslog. Look at the sites for an example. Hi Everyone, A while ago we more or less discontinued development of phpweblog in favour of a new ground-up project called webstract, which was to be more of a framework, but also a functional weblog/cms style app. However, due to everyone having 'real jobs' and the like we seemed to lack the momentum to get webstract off the drawing board (or even finish drawing it really). This leaves us here, where we have phpweblog, a well-written, simple and functional weblog, and webstact, a better app in theory, but only existing in theory. I am hoping to find some more time for developing my own projects soon, and I would like to see this picked up again - I would be happy to work on phpweblog again or get webstract off the ground - but I want to sound it out with everyone else first... Where to from here? Do we have the time to get webstract into reality? Or is resurecting phpweblog to active development a better plan? Who's still active around these parts? What does our collective freetime look like? -- Dylan Reeve - dy...@wi... It's just not cricket. |

Hi Folks. I just set up a blog, using 5.2. Got a few things to work on though. I notice that 1 missed quotation mark can really mess up editing an article. Not sure how to go about fixing that yet. Would like to get auto-notify to weblogs.com. Have dl'd a couple of php scripts for doing that, but haven't tried them out yet. Still tweaking the layout, which I shamelessy based on the silver template. Anyhow, thought I'd say hello. http://rockchucker.com/cosmic/ later, jed -- We're frogs who are getting boiled in a pot full of single-character morphemes, and we don't notice. - Larry Wall; Perl6, Apocalypse 5 |

Dear sir
I know this proposal letter may come to you as a
surprise considering the fact that we have not had any
formal acquaintance before .but all the same I would
want you for the sake of God to give this an immediate
attention in view of the fact that the security of our
live and possession is at stake .
I am Mr EDWARD HAMSON a 28 years old from war ravaged
SIERRA LEONE but presently domiciled in Abidjan Ivory
coast with my sister JANET who is 18 years old .My
father Mr RICHARD HAMSON who before his untimely
assassination by the rebels was the Director of SIERRA
LEONE Diamond corporation (SLDC) .He was killed in our
government residential house along side two of my
other brothers ,two house maids and one government
attached security guard fortunately for I, younger
sister and mother ,we were on a week end visit to our
home town As we got the news of the tragedy .We
immediately managed to ran into neighbouring Ivory
coast for refuge .But unfortunately .As
Fate would have it ,we lost our dear mother (may soul
rest in peace) as a result of what the Doctor called
cardiac arrest .
As we were coming into this country ,we had some
documents of a deposit of $ 11 700 000 USD (eleven
million seven hundred thousand USD ) made by my late
father in a security and trust company .According to
my father, he intended to use this fund for his
international business transaction after his tenure in
office but was unfortunately murdered .We had located
the security company where the money is deposited with
the help of an attorney and established ownership
.please right now ,with the bitter experiences we had
in our country and the war still going on especially
in diamond area which incidentally is where we hail
from .coupled with the incessant political upheavals
and hostilities in this country Ivory coast ,we
desire seriously to leave here and live the rest of
our life into a more peaceful and politically stable
country like yours Hence this proposal and request .We
therefore wish you can help us in the following
regards :
1) To provide us with a good bank account to transfer
the money into
2) To help us invest the money into a lucrative
business .
3) To assist my sister Janet get a college admission
to further her education.
Please I know that , this letter may sound strange and
incredible to you but the CNN and the BBC African
bulletin normally have it as their major news
features .Therefore for the sake of God and humanity
give an immediate positive consideration and reply to
me via our e-mail address. I will willingly agree to
any suitable percentage of the money you will propose
as your compensation for your assistance with regards
to the above .please in view of our sensitive refugee
status and as we are still conscious of our father 's
enemies .I would like you to give this a highly
confidential approach .
Best Regards .
EDWARD HAMSON

I agree 100%, and I'm right behind you. I need the exact same sort of framework for developing applications myself. I urge you to join the Binarycloud (http://binarycloud.com) mailing list, as we are doing just that. As for a more application-level approach to this type of content management, there have been little discussions on porting parts of phpWebLog into the Horde (http://horde.org) framework. I myself am consumed in the Binarycloud project as it is a more versatile approach to building web applications. You're not limited to any form of project to develop since everything is a module (topics, news, search, etc) and you literally build your application designs like lego. We could use some more hands and eyes too. =] jason |

Hello everybody! I've followed the development of phpWebLog since version 0.2.x ! Sadly this great project stands still, but I want to try to change that :) Many people said that we need a more flexible way of managing all things. That means to divide into core and modules. This sounds good, but I don't have a real plan how the specs to this should be. Maybe we could together develop a model of the next phpWebLog. I've got problems for example with the flexible way of adding themes and layouts. All weblog projects have the same basics of layouts (Picture at the bottom, menu left and right, in the middle news). How can we easily make a complete configurable layout? I think the layout manager needs a lot of work, because I want to give every Blocks,Page,Topic... a different theme. I think the main core should have these things: - Powerful Layout Manager (Pages/Blocks/Menu/CSS-Styles) - Usermanager (Configurable new Usergroups with different rights/assigning users to topics ...) - Topic Manager - Showing/posting News (Maybe this as a module?) These should be modules: - Search - Downloads - Forum - Picture Gallery - Database Diagnostic/Backup - Last 5 Comments - Topic Block - ... everything else that is usefull :) So, what do you think of that? bye - Stefan |

True, phpWebLog is designed very simple so it is easy to understand, but it is also limited. Doing things like what you're trying to do is basically reengineering the design of how header/footer work. I can answer questions, but it's been a looong while since I've looked at any phpWebLog code. I'm too rusty to help much more than that. jason David Nex wrote: > Weblog seems to be very stricts, when we willing to change his default > struture. > Even if i adopted it because i was thinking that it codes rules were simple > and easy to understand ... |

Hi all, I d like to make 2 sites with nearly the same structure. Here s a scheme : ------------------------------------------------------------------- | Simple static header *1 | ------------------------------------------------------------------ | Left Blocks | Dynamic Header with searchboxes, logo ... | | doblocks(l) | | | special menu | | | funcs *2 | *3 | ----------------------------------------------------------------- | Page space drawmain, for max space for article *4 | --------------------------------------------------------------- | Static dyn footer *5 | --------------------------------------------------------------- I m based on a phpweblog053. I remark that with default header/footer weblog make left blocks encroached page space ! It's ugly for me i need maximum space for page space. I dont know how to proced to do for my special struture. I only want left blocks to encorach dyn header space. What do u think about this method : *1 goes into header.inc.php that calls drawheader *2+*3 goes into drawheader which contains a drawblocks(left) *4 is drawmain for page space *5 is a drawfooter calls into footer.inc.php, footer has no longer additional html tags. Can U give me a little template samples or new header/footer .php to make that. I trying to do that but I m losing my hairs, I didnt manage even with this method ! ? Weblog seems to be very stricts, when we willing to change his default struture. Even if i adopted it because i was thinking that it codes rules were simple and easy to understand ... Thanks. |

What you want to do is a bit out of the design scope for phpWebLog.
Though possible, you're looking at quite a task.

You're on the right track. It's laid out similar to:
+------------------+
| header |
+----+-------+-----+
|left| main |right|
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
+----+-------+-----+
| footer |
+------------------+
header.php opens the table, outputs header, outputs the left column
blocks, opens the main table.
footer.php closes the main table, outputs the right column blocks,
closes the table.
I doubt this will be of much help to you, but hopefully it will be.
good luck =]

Hi all,
I d like to make 2 sites with nearly the sames struture, here i make a
scheme :
----------------------------------------------
| Here header for both sites (static) |
----------------------------------------------
| Here | Here special header for |
| Left | site |
| Blocks | With drawsearch ... |
| F_Blo. | |
| (dyn) | (dyn) |
----------------------------------------------
| Here page space (static or dyn) |
---------------------------------------------
| Footer for both sites (static/dyn) |
----------------------------------------------
I m based on phpweblog 053.
Judging from the API file, we usually make new page with this struture :
<?
include("./include/common.inc.php");
include("./include/header.inc.php");
// here page space
include("./include/fotter.inc.php");
?>
I want to respect this API, which is good i think.
If I keep default header/footer, I remark that weblog page space is
encroached by left / rigth blocks drawing.
I dont want it it's so ugly.
In my struture it can encroach the "Special header" only, in order to have
max palce for page space.
I think I need to change header/footer.inc, but which html tags must remain
in this file ?
LeftBlocks drawing and special header are dynamic, so I had to make it goes
into php code, espcecially into drawheader functions ?
I cant manage to achieve what I want to do, can u help me doing simple
template, drawheader function from a little nude weblog 053.
I think it difficult to change the default organisation of <table> in weblog
053, I m losing my hairs.
Thanks.
