I mean like the actual GD library... did you patch that source? or just
"make" it after unpacking it? or do you use an RPM of it?

Here is my configure line.

./configure  --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-mysql --enable-xml
--with-gd --disable-debug --enable-versioning --enable-track-vars
--enable-trans-sid
