The url you cite above is 404 for me.. did you try it without the www?

Failing that:
- add a order number (try like.. 1)
- Try uncommenting the ini_set() calls at the top of config.inc and see
if your php gives you an error, send those errors back here, along with
your httpd and php versions.

Hi, all.  This may be a dumb question, but how do I set up a block to
view an RSS newsfeed in RC3? I tried setting up an RSS block according to some
instructions I saw in the phpSlash manual.  I created a block with the
following values:

    * title - "slashdot"
    * type - "rss"
    * site location - "http://www.slashdot.org";
    * source url - "http://www.slashdot.org/slashdot.rss";
    * expire length - "7200"
    * section - "Home"
    * Data - empty
    * order number - empty
But the block never shows up.  I don't even get a title bar, even when
I select the "View" option from the block menu, let alone on the home page.
I loaded the .rss URL in my browser manually, and there is indeed content
there.  I'm mystified.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

The blocks default to showing the current value when there is an error.  
In this case the current cache is blank so nothing is shown.  Try it 
without the www or another known rss feed ( such as your local 
backend.php).

The rss blocks have an "error" option that will show the error instead of 
being silent.

errors = on  - always display errors
         off - never display errors
         debug - only display errors in debug mode [default]

This arises from so many rss feeds not always validating or unavailable 
for some reason.

There is the problem that the URL doesn't exist.  :-(  But I think the 
reason you get nothing instead of at least an error is that you don't have 
a column set.  In the variables section of the block administration form, 
make sure you put column ... right (or left or center).

You shouldn't *need* to define a column.  If so, that's a bug. (either
against the block admin interface for not putting it in the options box or
the block_render interface for not having resonalble defaults - take your
pick :)

The block should still display when updating or pressing "view" in the 
blockAdmin.

The column has no default value in the blockAdmin interface yet.  I would 
like to add this when we have the ability for a drop down with choices for 
the options.  Otherwise it's just a choice that is best only for the 
default installation.  The default installation already has values for the 
blocks filled in.

Sounds good.  My point was to say if the code can't handle not having a
column option that that's a bug, we can hack around it by adding a column
option to the template so it there or add default someplace in the
blockAdmin code.

What this sounds like is a few problems falling on top of each other - I'd
like to see why php is die()'ing and suspect that this might be some
as-yet-unseen php+expat+apache issue.  It could also be as simple as
fopen() on the particular install isn't allowed to open sockets so it
dies, but of course display_errors is off so all you get is a blank page.

Hey.. I guees we should maybe change the RSS and URL parsers to use
fsockopen() :)
