I'm trying to install on RH8.0. I enter a username/password (have tried both root and phpopenchat users, with appropriately legit passwords).

It just goes right back to the first screen again, no indication of any problem of any sort.

Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong, or how to debug this would be GREATLY appreciated!

  Ouch. It was register_globals not set to yes in php.ini.
  
  I didn't see this in any of the documentation, though. Guess I should have read through more of the notes in this board before posting, because I found it way back about 8 months ago.
