I've installed on two different web hosts and have had nothing but problems with this system.  Was it even tested?

The install script doesn't work beyond step 1.  I configured everything by hand.   test.php gives me a blank page.

When I try to go to the index.php in the main directory I get a blank page - a refresh gives me:

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in [my docroot]/chat/include/class.Chat.inc on line 1177

man, I know how you'rre feeling.  I gave on this crap along time ago.  When I read the discription a while on hotscripts.com and needscripts.com, it sounded like everything that I was looking for in a chat script but support sucks.  The're's only a few that go this to work and I wish I was one of them.  I would get pass the install steps and on index.php it will say there's an error line 114.  I 've posted for help many times and I get nothing.  Since you and I are having the same problem, in case you get it to work, please feel free to send me an email at webmaster@newpornlist.com

      Try http://www.x7chat.com/
      or http://mpm.pahviloota.net/
      or http://www.webdev.ro/products/webchat/index.php
I'm not convinced that PhpOpenChat works on Unix systems according to the manual.  So many problems its almost a joke.

Actually, I did get it working, and working well. Updating the adodb did the trick. I run on RHEL3, but MySQL is updated to v4.0 to take advantage of the encryption stuff.

The only way I got it running was with a bit of guesswork. I got the (very common it seems) XML error message, which told me of a missing tpl file.

As s shot to nothing, I renamed index.tpl to the file name that it was looking for, and bingo, it worked. install.php also has to be deleted too.

Next problem, is not finding an English Language manual to workout how to log in as administrator or whatever the admin is called in this script.

Oh, and yes, I need to do some customisation too.
