What would I do if I want to show Users in Chat from my homepage in a block?

  start hacking out a block. Blocks are supposed to be rather easy to code up but catching up on the reading and the implementation is rather fun. So from what I can see you would need to take all the code from about half way down the index.tpl.php page and work that into your post nuke or nuke block template.
