Can we please get some help here please!!!

There are 3 similar outstanding posts here that appear to suggest major flaws where product config file modifications to customize product result in errors and nobody is responding to the questions being surfaced.

Well, usually when you get these errors it's due to a user configuring the file wrong. There is no bug in the config file, it's in how and where you made the changes. You need to replace the file with an older version and it will work just fine. You can than retry changing the room defaults with the same entry as you tried before, or think outta of the box and try something new.... Like change default to lounge and see what happens....

      Tim,
Thanks for the response. I simply edited the chat/config/config.lib.php3 file.

In one case all I did was change the parameter to show the admin link from 0 to 1. Saved file and got the errors upon returing to entry page. That's all I changed nothing else.

In other cases I simply tried to chnge names of chat rooms in array in config file. Same problem. Further attempts altering any other fields yielded same results.

How would you suggest going about customizing this product if not through direct modification of the config file. Is there some other interface for customization I am missing?

Is there a series of steps one should follow in modifying config file? Can you tell me what the messages are implying are wrong? Again all I did was change a 0 to a 1 and save file?????

      Thanks in advance
      Chris

      Tim,
And yes I replaced the original original file to start over each time.....verifying each time working properly before going back in making a mod to config file. Again each time I made even the simplest of changes to config file....I get errors. I went through this process of restoring, editing, restoring, editing many many times until I threw my my hands up in air in frustration.
Actaully I even went as far as deleting chat room and reinstalling several times to make sure I was back to a pristine state. Each time worked fine until I made even a trivial change to config file???????????

      Best regards
      Chris

Never had anything like this happen, and I've been using the product for almost a year now. The only thing I can think of is you're deleting some information that is needed, maby a comma, or colon somewhere. You should try to make each change one at a time, save and see if it takes effect. The other thing that might have something to do with it is, use a Linux or Unix server, because windows bites...... Also, after every change make sure you refresh your page before viewing it.... Also, the read write permissions might change due to the editor you're using, so make sure the file is readable and see if that lets your changes take effect...

      Tim,
      Again....made changes one at a time.....example: simply change a 0 to a 1....nothing else...save file. Check effect. Errors.
Think I'm on a linux server.

I'd like to take a look at this site myself, and I went to the link and it's no longer there, did you change the directory or just take the whole site down? Have you also tried refreshing the phpMyChat.php3 page after every update, I know I made a few updates and users got errors until they hit refresh....

      Tim,
FYI. Altering file results in no change of permission on file.

Ok, I took a look at your site and you're definetly getting those errors. I noticed the error does not appear in the linux browser Konqueror, but it does in netscape and IE. I even tried to setup the say layout you have and I could install the site and make changes with no trouble. So, now what I'm wondering is how you set this site up? Did you use the chat/setup.php3 to install the site? Under this setup there is also an option for choosing default room names, if you resetup the site using chat/setup.php3 you should be able to make the room name changes from the start. I also did the setup.php3 and than made changes to the config.lib.php3 and had no trouble. So, it's either how you setup it up in the first place or the server you're running it off of..... Sorry, wish I could help more, but I can't even recreate that error you're having.....

      Tim,
phpMYchat is one of the install option via Cpanel via my host provider. Through CPANEL interface I simply specify following xxxxxxxx. That's it!!!

      PhpMyChat Setup

                              Install a new chatroom

Please be aware that installing a chatroom will use one mysql database.

Install chatroom at this url: http://mywebsite.com/xxxxxxx

                              Admin Username:  xxxxxxxxx
                              Admin Password:  xxxxxxxxx

(You must install the chatroom in a top level directory.)

Ok, last but not least, try this out..... go to http://www.smokeshanty.com/chatroom/chat/setup.php3
once you are there click on go, than on the next page choose the option of do nothing, the tables are already up to date. After that just follow the rest of the instructions.... You can make your changes to the default rooms and settings this way, and it will create the config.lib.php3 file for you. You should than copy this file to the server, if you have that type of access. Also, after this is done, and if it works, remove the chat/setup.php3 file from the server, so no one else can make changes to your site. Sounds like a problem on your end, if all this fails it's your web server causing the trouble, and you need to get someone that has admin access on that end to help you configure it the way you want it... At least we know what's causing it now, it's not the program, it's the provider....

      Hey Tim,
That did it!! That was the interface I was looking for all along!

Now if you could answer following for me

Login panel below restrictive in that it only allows 10 character user name. I need to allow more than 10 character user names for my site. Also I wish it would allow spaces in user name but I can live with that.
Is there a way to  mod to allow for greater than 10 character user names?
IO'm not requiring my users to use passwords so I would just like to eliminate this field from login panel.

In what file can I find the login panel. I would like to customize look of login panel a bit.

Thanks for all your help so far!!!!

You can find this in the chat/lib/index.lib.php3 file. It's at the very bottom of this, you can make changes to this entry
      <TR CLASS="ChatCell">
                              <TD ALIGN="<?php echo($CellAlign); ?>" VALIGN="TOP" CLASS="ChatCell" NOWRAP><?php echo(L_SET_2); ?> :</TD>
                              <TD VALIGN="TOP" CLASS="ChatCell">
                                      <INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="U" SIZE=11 MAXLENGTH=10 VALUE="<?php echo(htmlspecialchars(urldecode($U))); ?>" CLASS="ChatBox">

make changes to 11 to say 14, and 10 to 13. This will allow users to have 13 character users names (or make changes acording to what number you would like. Right below this information is the password field and everything else you're wanting to make changes to, just delete or alter this information. Please keep the phpMyChat link at the bottom, or at least give them credit for their site on your main page.... :) I'm also not sure about spaces in names, never thought about this, and now that you have me thinking, I'll look into it.... Hope this helps

Where can I set background colors?

You can change all the color settings for the site under the chat/config/style.css.php3 file. Also, lets stop posting to this topic dicussion. If you have any more new questions, just add the question as a new post and I'll reply to it there. This is so others don't have to go through all the information we've discussed just to find an answer they could of found specific to the title of the issue...

i just thought i'd add my 2 cents worth.....

I installed this through cpanel and everything just worked.

started to play with the config from files from office...upload.....no problem.

got home and began to edit the files, when i uploaded i was getting strange errors after making just the smallest changes. namely "cannot send headers......." (i will post the actual error when i get back home)

I was using JEdit to edit these files, and i tried saving as
Unix(/n),Windows(/r/n) and Mac(/n) formats (linefeeds) just incase.

      still got the errors

so i thought i'll try somthing here....
opened up file in notepad, made NO changes, saved, uplaoded....NIGHTMARE!!!
OK next idea: open up command prompt edit config.lib.php3, save, upload, WORKS!!
do the same except make changes....WORKED!!!!

so edit worked?? jedit no-go, and notepad:forget it!(suprise)

i'll have a look into it when i get some time this interests me.....
      gotta go have lunch now
