This is really pissen me off!!  They make this program and don't give hardly any help documentation.

I DONT know php or Perl!!!

I don't even know how to setup a mysql database!!

How the #$%# am I suppose to use this program if I dont know this stuff.

I shouldn't ahve to spend a couple years just to learn something so I can use one @#$%@ program!!

Why don't you write an installation for dummies!!  I'm sick and tired of all these people assuming we know everything they do because we dont!!

Oh come on!  There are loads of easy ways and hosted solutions if you don't want to do the work.  Most of us (me included) started with them.  As you learn a bit more, you want to do things better - that's fine. But you have to do what the rest of us have done - make a little bit of effort.

No-one can or will spoon feed you.  The programs are available free for download and there's a lot of free help available.  But you have to do a LITTLE work for yourself.  You need to learn the basics of setting up a MySQL database before you can install a program that uses one - it's all available and free - what more do you want?

I'd like to see some documentation regarding customizing it.  yes I do know some PHP but still, it would be nice is someone had SOMETHING written down about where to start, tips, and different ways they have found to intergrate phpchat into their websites.

Especially since the default user interface is SO ugly and unproffesional.

I agree that the phpheaven team don't seem to be updating their phpmychat site with relevant information.

Most of the help files or websites they list there are since dead or unavailabe. And google doesn't turn up much. I believe they would get much more users if they developed an additional program for those downloading it to at least customize their program with more ease.

So far I haven't run into much trouble with customization, but it was definitely more of an effort to do it than it should have been.

My biggest problem is "missing files" and the tutorials don't help with the most basic levels of customization that could solve that.

I have just enrolled in the Yahoogroup as well as these Forums. But dammit, how can they tell you to RTFM when there isn't one??? I am an HTML programmer, very simple like, and was asked to add a chat room to the website; phpMyChat was available at my host, so it was a slam dunk. Now I find that they expect me to be able to read and write PHP... a simple manual, like telling me what each thing does with examples, is not out of the question.

I agree that there needs to be better documentation. I work on and build computers and do very light HTML and Dreamweaver, but learning to install some of these PHP modules has been a huge headache. I can see why commercial versions are so expensive, it's worth it!

I suppose that the people who write this stuff for free just don't have the time to write documentation. This is where some enterprising user should come in and make $$ writing the manuals for all of this stuff. But even a lot of the assistance here seems to assume that you already are adept at PHP and coding in some other areas before you'll attempt to use the open source stuff.

God bless 'em for writing this because it has GOT to be a lot of work, but somebody PLEASE, write a manual!!!

I'm trying to install phpmychat plus right now with no success. I'm sure after hours of wading through the web and the config files I'll figure it out, but not always, I'm no programmer and life's too short. Anyone know a good chat program. Wouldn't it be great if these programs came with installers that configured themselves with basic configurations?

      WTFM!

If you'd have read the Plus docs and install/Instructions.txt, your life would have been easir, wouldn't it? Besides, there are some services offered for the newbies of this chat program (the best chat so far on the both free and commercial market :p).
When you have troubles, as a newbie, you should provide the data of your server hosting (php version, mysql, and such) in order to get a quick response.
For now, just take a look at the services :p and eventually contact me privately.

PS: this topic is pretty old, hundreds of newbies but also advanced users have received tones of help in the yahoo group discussions we run on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phpmychat/join
        Good luck!

I have just downloaded PhPMyChat Plus 1.92-f7 and I need help. I would like to either embed it into my site (which is only a Proboard forum) or link to it somehow but the instructions that come with it talk completely over my head (I don't know computer jargon and understand even less. I used to have PhPMyChat on a site I used to have (and loved it) but someone else installed it and set it up for me so i am completely clueless and out of my element. Since my membership in the Yahoo group is still pending can somebody here help me out (and explain it in kindergarten terms I can understand?)?

        Hi Candy!
Sorry, our moderators might have been busy! I just activated your account on the Yahoo phpmychat group.
If you think the Instructions provided are too much for you, contact me by email and I can give you a hand.

        Ciprian.
