We no longer need the distinct query window (seperate window opening from the navi panel or from the top Edit link in browse mode).
Its SQL history should be kept and moved to the screen bottom, along with a section always showing the latest SQL query performed.
What's the meaning of GSOC2014 label ?
It should be implement during GSOC only ?
Yes, the feature has been chosen for GSoC only and is part of the ideas list.
Diff:
do you mean you want to remove this...?
please help me out.. i am seriously very much interested for working with you all in gsoc..
need to complete my proposal letter asap.
for that i need to get clear with everything.
The section you marked with a red circle shows the last query executed. One aspect of this feature request is about moving this section to the bottom. Another aspect is about removing the distinct query window.
i believe there are two sections of users of PMA
1. who use PMA to efficiently handle their database. They are not concerned with the code generated. They use the interface provided by PMA to get the desired result.
but there is another section too.
2. who use PMA to "write" a lot of queries for them. see https://sourceforge.net/p/phpmyadmin/feature-requests/1145/
and i have been user of both kind.
so i believe the decision of removing the sql query box depends upon what is more important to the user. End result when query is run or the query generated.
so, possible solution could be a checkbox asking if only query is required. If only query is required, then prime importance would be the query and in that case present state of separate query box will work fine.
however in other case, where end result is more important, query box should me moved down to bottom. So that user can browse the changes brought by query. And if user want to see the query too, can scroll down to it.
Aayush,
when you write "removing the sql query box", I'm not sure that you mean the same thing as me. I am talking about the "distinct query window", not about a query box.
yes.. i meant same.. sorry for the ambiguity.
only point i want to raise is this decision of removing the distinct query window and moving it down should depend upon what user is putting more importance on. if on the query generated or output obtained.
It's more a matter of consistency in the interface, by removing this separate window.
yes..
what would you then suggest..? taking into picture both the fact
consistency and user requirement
What I suggest is in this feature request. I did not suggest to remove the query box, just to remove its implementation in a distinct query window.
hi marc,
plz see these two pictures. I was thinking of moving the query window below in the form of something footer type section.
please see this and comment.
I feel this will be consistent too. I have been thinking over it.
But first you see this then I will get in details.
Aayush,
this is interesting. Does the bottom part also contain the history of queries?
hi Marc,
i personally feel if query history will be displayed in that footer
type query box, then the size of footer will increase which might not
look well.
But if query history has to be included, then that will be the only best place.
so, yes we can add the query history there.
also i would like to focus some features which i am thinking:
1. i added a green bullet in the right side to show if query was
successfully executed. otherwise red bullet is displayed if error is
there in the query.
2. size of compressed "footer type query box" is fixed. but it is
expandable and can be compressed again.
3. if user only wants the query, then by default an expanded footer
will be displayed which can be compressed. and if query is executed,
then by default an compressed footer will be displayed which can be
expanded.
i feel this will be consistent too
