Hello guys,
it is possible to integrate a auto updater for phpMyAdmin?
I always use the latest version. So I download it and upload it on my webserver. Other CMS for example has a auto update. So I click on "update now" and a script download the zip-package, extract it and overwrite all files and the new version ist installed.
It is possible to implement this feature for phpMyAdmin?
Thank you in advance!
Hello Dennis,
Thanks for this suggestion! I assume this feature will be helpful for users to stay on top of the newest releases (as WordPress does). We will think about this in our next team meeting.
Hi J.M.,
thanks you for your comment. I also think that this makes sense. Many providers do not update because it is too expensive. So the provider makes every year one update. With this function, which will probably be different.
Thank you for your effort!

I don't think auto-updating would work in practice. Most phpMyAdmin installation are probably on a shared server where (normally) the web server's effective user does not have write rights to the install folder (otherwise the security risk would be high).
Hey Marc Delisle,
thanks for your comment. The update link should only displayed for users with administrator rights or so. The provider only can upgrade it with this nice feature.
And users which have a root oder v-server => auto update is no problem.
So, the old way to download, extract and upload is possible too.
Thank you

Dennis,
The team discussion about this feature request will take place in October. Please be patient!
Hey J.M.,
that's ok, thank you for your answer!
greetings :-)
On which day is it? :-)
In 2 days, please have a little more patience…
Ah, ok. Thats no problem, thanks for your answer! :)
Any result for this feature? :-)
On our monthly meeting, we decided not to implement this idea, because the cost/advantage factor in development time in regard to the number of users who would benefit from this is too low. It would require write-access to the webserver user, which poses a security risk.
Ok, I understand. I have to accept that.
But thanks for your answers! :-)
You’re welcome, Dennis. If you have more suggestions in mind that phpMyAdmin users could benefit from, feel free to open another feature request!
Can you reconsider your decision?
I really like phpMyAdmin and always like to stay updated. Currently your are releasing updates couple of times per month and each time I have to go through delete>download>extract cycle. It is counter intuitive and against DRY principle.
One the other hand, I have seen people still using age old versions. How can anyone stay secure using older version of a software? Auto updater will solve this problem for most of the users.
I see you are well prepared for the upcoming major release, i.e. 4.5. Giving a chance to auto update will make a lot of people rejoice. If this feature has to bring breaking changes, this is the right time.
Thanks for your time and effort.
We will re-discuss this at our next meeting in July:
