#6 template.inc enhancements

Here's a bunch of postings from the mailing list that
relate to templates.

Some of these things will probably be implemented in
the standard template class. Some definitely won't be
(conditional statements!). Some postings are just there
because they contain the word "template" and are
interesting. Some stuff is probably irrelevant.
