What on earth does form->validate() do !?!?

I just cannot find out what the validate() member function of the form class does!

I've read the documentation but all it says about validate() is some vague description.

I've tried to understand the sourcecode but it's pure spaghetti so i cannot manage to understand it.

So therefore this post: can anyone tell me what this function does and what it's good for??
