Persistant connections will provide you with a performance improvement. One of the most resource expensive activities to a database is establishing the connection. Persistant connections removes this need by keeping the connection alive. If the same user ID, password and database are used again, php say "Hey, I already have a connection, I will use that one." and off it goes.
There are some down sides as well, but they are minor.
Also note worthy is that persistant connections do not work with the cgi version of PHP.

In fact i ask it because I read an article from tim perdue (phpbuilder) where he said that for mysql persistent connections didn't improve performance.

Is it really interesting with mysql ?
