Newsletter - March 2005* Greetings all, Welcome to the March issue of the Hotscripts newsletter... Have you heard of the "Attack of The Red Hat Clones <http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/article.php/3488781>?" Wait, this is not Steven Spielberg's latest release, but a news headline that has been dominating the Open Source Industry. Open source licensing allows third parties to create 'clones' of Red Hat's Enterprise Linux 4 distribution. What can Red Hat do about it? Red Hat is now involved in a battle, fighting for their intellectual property. This puts emphasis on the fact it's important that you protect your software by obtaining the right license for your script. You should give serious thought as to how you decide to license your script. We at HotScripts.com stress that you enter your licensing info, and in this newsletter, we'll briefly explain the different licensing policies. As usual we always welcome your comments and suggestions. If you have any questions, feel free to submit a ticket and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. We do our very best to answer all your questions, and if you've recently submitted a support ticket and have not heard back from us yet, please re-submit another one. - Ahmad Permessur Newsletter Editor ==================================================== Finally! Licensing Policies If you haven't yet edited your listing to add your license info, we would strongly recommend you doing so. There are various license policies and we've selected the most common ones for you to choose for your resources. Don't be bamboozled by those technical jargons, here's a brief breakdown of the different license types and a brief explanation: *Freeware *A form of software/script distribution where you retain the copyright of the software, but make the program available to others at no cost. This means that no-one can change the software in any way unless permission is expressly granted to do so by you. *Commercial License *Commercial Licenses differ from software to software. They are, most of the time, paid software or scripts issued to a specific company or organization, which entitles them to use a copy of the software/script. A Commercial License is usually sold for a year or per site or server. *Free Trial *Use this licensing of a software program or script when you want a user to evaluate your script for a limited period of time at no cost. *GPL *The GNU General Public License is a form of copyright that is commonly applied to software that the authors wish to distribute for the common good. Paraphrased, it says that the software may be altered and re-distributed as desired but that the original code must also be distributed. ( More info <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>) *LGPL *GNU Lesser General Public License: If you want to be sure that all copies of your program, even modified ones, are accompanied by the corresponding source, or by an easy way of getting the source, you should use the GNU GPL. ( More info <http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lesser.html>) *BSD Style *If you aim at maximum diffusion for your code by allowing its use in any program, be it free or proprietary, you should use the "new BSD license" (also called the "BSD license without the advertising clause") *PHP License *This license is used by most versions of PHP. It is a non-copyleft free software license which is incompatible with the GNU GPL. We recommend that you not use this license for anything except PHP add-ons. ( More Info <http://www.php.net/license/3_0.txt>) *Free for non-commercial use *Use this type of license if you want to enable individuals, including students, technology educators and individual developers to use your scripts at no cost. You can apply other limitations like a link back to your homepage. * Other Free / Open Source License *There are various other free / open source licenses available.
