Newsletter - March 2005* Greetings all, Welcome to the March issue of the Hotscripts newsletter... Have you heard of the "Attack of The Red Hat Clones <http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/article.php/3488781>?" Wait, this is not Steven Spielberg's latest release, but a news headline that has been dominating the Open Source Industry. Open source licensing allows third parties to create 'clones' of Red Hat's Enterprise Linux 4 distribution. What can Red Hat do about it? Red Hat is now involved in a battle, fighting for their intellectual property. This puts emphasis on the fact it's important that you protect your software by obtaining the right license for your script. You should give serious thought as to how you decide to license your script. We at HotScripts.com stress that you enter your licensing info, and in this newsletter, we'll briefly explain the different licensing policies. As usual we always welcome your comments and suggestions. If you have any questions, feel free to submit a ticket and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. We do our very best to answer all your questions, and if you've recently submitted a support ticket and have not heard back from us yet, please re-submit another one. - Ahmad Permessur Newsletter Editor ==================================================== Finally! Licensing Policies If you haven't yet edited your listing to add your license info, we would strongly recommend you doing so. There are various license policies and we've selected the most common ones for you to choose for your resources. Don't be bamboozled by those technical jargons, here's a brief breakdown of the different license types and a brief explanation: *Freeware *A form of software/script distribution where you retain the copyright of the software, but make the program available to others at no cost. This means that no-one can change the software in any way unless permission is expressly granted to do so by you. *Commercial License *Commercial Licenses differ from software to software. They are, most of the time, paid software or scripts issued to a specific company or organization, which entitles them to use a copy of the software/script. A Commercial License is usually sold for a year or per site or server. *Free Trial *Use this licensing of a software program or script when you want a user to evaluate your script for a limited period of time at no cost. *GPL *The GNU General Public License is a form of copyright that is commonly applied to software that the authors wish to distribute for the common good. Paraphrased, it says that the software may be altered and re-distributed as desired but that the original code must also be distributed. ( More info <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>) *LGPL *GNU Lesser General Public License: If you want to be sure that all copies of your program, even modified ones, are accompanied by the corresponding source, or by an easy way of getting the source, you should use the GNU GPL. ( More info <http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lesser.html>) *BSD Style *If you aim at maximum diffusion for your code by allowing its use in any program, be it free or proprietary, you should use the "new BSD license" (also called the "BSD license without the advertising clause") *PHP License *This license is used by most versions of PHP. It is a non-copyleft free software license which is incompatible with the GNU GPL. We recommend that you not use this license for anything except PHP add-ons. ( More Info <http://www.php.net/license/3_0.txt>) *Free for non-commercial use *Use this type of license if you want to enable individuals, including students, technology educators and individual developers to use your scripts at no cost. You can apply other limitations like a link back to your homepage. * Other Free / Open Source License *There are various other free / open source licenses available. *Newsletter - February 2005* Greetings all, I am delighted to say that we have a truly terrible web page designer amongst us! Congratulations to Laura, winner of our 'Design The World's Worst Web Page' contest. Her entry can be viewed at: http://www.angelfire.com/wv/mbd/index.htm As Vincent Flanders pointed out in his book 'Son of Web Pages that Suck', web designers are inventing 'new and improved' mistakes. Web design isn't brain surgery, but creating an effective Web page isn't as easy as some people think. Hopefully Laura's website will show how you can learn from design mistakes to make your web sites more effective. Some of the biggest oohs and aahs last year went to plasma TV screens. Hot Interview /Hotscripts is an amazing traffic generating tool for those who are selling scripts or want to showcase their resources. We have over 14,000 listing partners who are taking advantage of this free extra exposure. This month, we chat with one of those listing partners, Eddie Machaalani of Interspire <http://www.interspire.com/>, and he tells us how Hotscripts has been beneficial to his business. / * **Hotscripts: Eddie, can you tell us more about yourself and your products? * Eddie: I am a co-director of Interspire <http://www.interspire.com/>, a web software development company who develops web based tools (scripts) for web masters and web developers, such as content management applications, email marketing tools, knowledge base applications etc. I manage the day to day operations of Interspire, as well as the majority of our marketing initiatives. *Hotscripts: How long have you been in the business of selling scripts? * Eddie: We first started selling WebEdit Professional <http://www.interspire.com/webedit/> (our first product) in 2002, and we've now expanded into 7 innovative products, with more on the way. *Hotscripts: I noticed that you deploy your solutions in multiple languages (ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, and Perl). Any particular reason for that? Which one sells the most? * Eddie: Yes, because of customer request, we decided to build our more popular applications in various scripting languages. We diversified our market, and were able to cater for all server environments and developer preference. Our greatest revenue producer however, is PHP, and we've recently decided to focus more on PHP development, rather than diversifying into various other scripting languages. *Hotscripts: You have been listed on HotScripts.com for a long time. Do you get decent traffic from us? * Eddie: Yeah, we've been listed on Hotscripts.com for as long as I can remember, way before iNET Interactive took over (who's doing a great job I might add). We get really good traffic from Hotscripts.com, but more importantly, we receive targeted traffic -- potential customers who are looking specifically for our product range. *Hotscripts: How far has Hotscripts.com promoted your business? * Eddie: It's hard to measure exactly, however, the first place I advertise our new release products, is usually on Hotscripts.com. *Hotscripts: You have sponsored listings for most of your products on HotScripts.com. Do you see any particular payback that sponsored listings have over normal listings? * Eddie: Being a sponsored listing, means we can showcase our products to a greater audience and improve our branding and this is a cost-effective way for us to increase our traffic and sales. *Hotscripts: What feature of HotScripts do you like most as compared to other script directories? * Honestly, there's no one feature that stands out, except the huge amount of traffic :) *Hotscripts: Any idea as to how HotScripts can improve itself and be more beneficial to listing partners like yourself? * Eddie: The one thing I can think of is to restrict featured listings to a maximum number. Without this, the value of these listings becomes greatly diluted and a huge list of advertised listings before normal listings becomes a bit of a pain for Hotscripts.com end users. *Hotscripts: Any final comments to Hotscripts.com's members? * Eddie: I'd just like to add that iNET Interactive is doing a great job with Hotscripts.com. They've maintained a great website without flooding it with advertising, and it continues to be one of the web's most valuable webmaster / web developer resources. Greetings all, First off, thanks to our Creative Director, Greg Pabst, for the revamped newsletter design. An* important note* to all our listings partners: Please make sure that you update your listings to reflect the new licensing information. As of the 15th of December 2004, we will no longer display old pricing information. 2005 brings with it an uncertainty as to what?s ahead in the year to come, but one thing you can be sure of is that HotScripts.com will be one of the more friendly places on the planet to be! Our CEO, Ryan Elledge, is currently mapping out the year ahead, Ryan Huff and I have been busy in the forums, and Sherry is feverishly answering the truckload of support tickets. 2005 is going to be huge! Remember to keep your comments coming to: new...@ho... <mailto:new...@ho...%20> - Ahmad Permessur Newsletter Editor <http://www.mysql.com/hosting> HotScripts.com Interview To the world, Mat Sumpter is someone, but to iNET Interactive, Mat is the world! Mat just turned 20, and he was also just promoted to Lead Developer at iNET Interactive, LLC. Also known as 'The Prohacker', Mat kindly took some time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions for us about himself, his new responsibilities and HotScripts.com. Joining me for an exclusive online interview, ladies and gentleman... it's Mat Sumpter. *HotScripts: Many of our readers are aware of your nickname but many are not. You are a.k.a. ?The Prohacker.? Tell us about the name. * Mat: I received the name ?The Prohacker' several years ago from a group of friends on IRC that knew my specialty was taking a program, piece of hardware, or even just an idea, and making it work. I love the challenge of figuring something new out and making it do something that it wasn't originally meant to do. * **HotScripts: Congratulations on your new promotion to Lead Developer! Please share with us some of your responsibilities as the new Lead Developer for iNET Interactive, LLC? * Mat: At iNET, everyone has to wear many hats. I am responsible for server maintenance and security, along with coordinating projects on all our properties. At the beginning of the day I could be planning the method of delivery for the HotScripts.com newsletter and by the end I'm repairing a desktop computer in the office. *HotScripts: So you are responsible for the maintenance and development of iNET's websites and cluster of servers? How many web servers are we talking about? * Mat: Yes, I am responsible for the day to day operations of the iNET Interactive cluster which can include adding new sites, upgrading software, and investigating new solutions. The cluster hosting HotScripts and all of our properties is comprised of 5 web servers (Dual Xeon, 2GBs of RAM, RAID 5 SCSI array), 4 database servers (Dual Xeon, 4GBs of RAM, RAID 5 SCSI array), along with several other supporting servers for mail, DNS, and advertising. *HotScripts: Have there been any recent additions to the iNET cluster of websites? * Mat: We just acquired HostVoice.com, after which it was my responsibility to move it to our cluster and ensure it was functioning properly. *HotScripts: HotScripts.com is one of the most popular properties of iNET, what kind of security measures are taken to protect a site like HotScripts.com? * Mat: In the world today there are many kinds of threats, the most common of which is the Denial of Service or Distributed Denial of Service attack. Many of our large sites like HotScripts.com have been subject to these sorts of attacks which spurred us to invest in a technology that lessens their affect. RackSpace informed us of their service, PrevenTier, which is an improvement of the "Guard" produced by Riverhead Networks. Currently PrevenTier protects our entire network of sites. *HotScripts: Do you ever have a need to use HotScripts.com yourself? * Mat: Whenever I need ideas on how to do something I'll run over to HotScripts and look for projects that meet the same basic criteria and view other options.** *HotScripts: What new projects does iNET have in the works for 2005? Mat: We have several projects up and coming for 2005. On the shortlist is a re-write of HostingCatalog and HostVoice, both of which will have all new back-ends and other features that will help distinguish both sites as the best in their category. *HotScripts: Anything else from iNET in 2005? * Mat: Based on feedback from our customers we are planning a complete re-write of the billing system to make the purchasing of advertising more efficient and easier on the end-user. One feature will allow HotScripts listing owners to purchase a sponsored listing and submit their listing ID, making this almost a fully automated process. We also have numerous other plans but there isn't enough room to list them all here! *HotScripts: Sounds awesome! What are some features of the new billing system? *Mat: Our plan is to make the media buying experience much easier with a public shopping cart that will lay out our options much clearer to the advertiser than the present system. We are also going to build in a support system and knowledge base for faster resolution to issues. [ /We can't wait, a user searchable knowledge base !/ ] *HotScripts: Wow, only 20 years old and so much responsibility! How cool is it to be the Lead Developer for iNET Interactive, owners of many sites like HotScripts and WebHostingTalk? *Mat: I must say its a very interesting experience to have so much responsibility, but I enjoy coming to work every day and working with the great people here! /[The Prohacker is certainly wise beyond his years; his position speaks for itself.] /* *HotScripts: Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to talk with us Prohacker. Did you try this out, The create.sql script, on the last line, uses ' instead of ` to quote field names. Hi there, After migrating to IIS, I have been encountering problems with the authentication levels after logging in. On the IIS server, PHP is configured to disallow global registers so I had to make a couple of changes in lines 55-64 of results.php: if (isset ($_POST['username']) && ($_POST['passwd'])) // they have just tried logging in { //$valid_user = $username; $_SESSION['valid_user'] = $username; $_SESSION['auth_level']; } else { With these alterations, I can login fine but neither the username is displayed under "logged in as" nor are the authorization levels properly set. I seem to have only read access despite the fact that my user has admin rights in the user table. I think I also need to set some Superglobals in user_auth_fns.php but I can't figure out how. I've tried making following changes in the functions login and check_valid_user: function login($username, $password) ... $GLOBALS['auth_level']; $auth_level=$row[access_level]; $_SESSION['auth_level']; ... function check_valid_user() ... $GLOBALS['valid_user']; if (isset($_SESSION['valid_user'])) { echo " Logged in: $valid_user"; echo "
"; echo "
"; } However, after making these changes I can no longer login and get the error "You do not appear to be logged on. This could be due to your Session timing out." Anyway if anyone can help that would be great. Thanks, Mark Mark Dayao System Consultant Premiere Fernsehen GmbH & Co.
