The latter enables faster, more responsive Web applications through a combination of asynchronous JavaScript, the Document Object Model (DOM), and XMLhttpRequest. A few nice applications making use of AJAX are showcased on the <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ajaxian.com%2F&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">Ajaxian Blog</a>.</p> <p>The problem with AJAX is that it requires the client to have JavaScript enabled. The browser has to support the XMLHttpRequest object as well. Currently, this is available in Mozilla, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. Rumor has it that Opera will introduce it soon. For those that find AJAX tough to master, I recommend having a look at <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.modernmethod.com%2Fsajax%2F&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">Sajax</a>, an open source tool that makes programming websites using the Ajax framework as easy as possible.</p><p>Happy AJAX-ing!</p> <p>- Ahmad Permessur <br> Newsletter Editor </p> <table width="400" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr bgcolor="#666666"> <td colspan="3"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#666666"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1"></td> <td width="398" bgcolor="#FFFFCC"><table width="398" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="8"> <tr> <td> <div align="left">Join t-refer and get up to 15% commission on all successful referrals of <strong><em><a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.t-refer.com%2F&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">thawte</a> </em></strong> digital certificate purchases. I started with FORTRAN and COBOL, moved on to C, C++, Java, and then scripting languages, which took me to Coldfusion., as it was the medium that was in use at a former job. Programming is one of my assets, and I really enjoy doing it.</p> <p>I probably spend 6-7 hours a day programming, on average. Most of my programming is for uplinkearth internal operations, in support of our hosting products. I wear many hats at uplinkearth, as I am the chief technical officer. I also manage the general operation of the computer systems.</p> <p><strong>HotScripts:</strong> What made you opt for CFML rather than the other programming languages?</p> <p><strong>Jim:</strong> Definitely ease of use and rapid development. Most scripting languages are faster than compiled languages to bring something from concept to implementation. In terms of CFML, it also looks a lot like HTML, and a lot of other programmers can understand it. Its very easy to pick up. Even if you dont know CFML, you can pick it up very quickly. Thats not true of other languages.</p> <p>Macromedia has encapsulated an enormous amount of functionality in its tags. The CFQuery tag, for example, is set for database access, and is one of the most powerful tags around if used correctly.</p> <p><strong>HotScripts:</strong> Can you tell us more about CFMX 7. Are there any backwards compatibility issues for those migrating from CFMX 6?</p> <p><strong>Jim:</strong> I dont know of any backwards compatibility issues. I do know that CFMX 7 is more stringent about attributes to the tags. If you code sloppy, its probably going to break. The big difference between MX6 and MX7, is the integration of rich media forms i.e. Flash, PDFs, etc. There are some improvements in the basic engine itself, as well.</p> <p><strong>HotScripts:</strong> CFMX 7 has the ability to run multiple instances of itself. How is this beneficial for a large-scale project?</p> <p><strong>Jim:</strong> The ability to run multiple instances has to do with scalability. Its not as big of factor as people might think. In an intranet environment, there are many benefits to be gained. For internet applications, however, there are probably no improvements, as the infrastructure is more fragile than the application. As an Internet hosting company, we are not likely to run multiple instances of ColdFusion.</p> <p><strong>HotScripts:</strong> Many programmers embrace CFML because of its easy-to-master tags. How do you think this helps in RAD and why haven't other programming languages adopted tag-like coding?</p> <p><strong>Jim:</strong> In my opinion, all scripting languages in general are RAD tools. CFML tags just happen to look like HTML, and are easy to learn. To answer the second part of the question, HTML does not seem to be popular among programmers, as it is not truly a language.</p> <p><strong>HotScripts:</strong> BlueDragon offers several compelling implementation alternatives to CFML. Would you recommend the switch?</p> <p><strong>Jim:</strong> There are a number of issues with security in virtual hosting, so BlueDragon doesnt always work. If you have complete control over your environment, BlueDragon makes sense, because of its pricing. However, in our environment with multiple users on the same server, I would not recommend it. If you really want to take advantage of all the rich media that Coldfusion offers, you need to use Macromedia ColdFusion, as BlueDragon is about 6 months to a year in development behind Macromedia.</p> <p><strong>HotScripts:</strong> Many programmers mourn about the memory management in CF. Is there a workaround for this?</p> <p><strong>Jim:</strong> Thats an interesting question. I dont remember mourning memory management in CF. However, like any programming language, judicious use of session and application variables, and caching queries, will always improve memory usage. One good thing about ColdFusion is the ability of the administrator to tweak the amount of memory ColdFusion uses. If you are really a die-hard, because it runs in a Java container, you could always go into the JVM and tweak memory usage.<br><br> <table width="400" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="20"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_left.gif" width="20" height="27"></td> <td width="380" background="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_bg.gif" class="titlebars">Featured Scripts </td> </tr> </table> <br> <table cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" width="400" border=0> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td width="77" align="left"><div align="center"><b>ASP</b></div></td> <td width="309"> <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F42125.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">AXML ASPNews</a><br>A stand-alone news script.</td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td align="left"><div align="center"><b>PHP</b></div></td> <td><a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F51822.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">PHPizabi</a><br>A free matchmaking script.</td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td align="left"><div align="center"><b>JavaScript</b></div></td> <td><strong><a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F51910.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">TabThing</a></strong><br> A JavaScript tab control.</td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td align="left"><div align="center"><b>Java</b></div></td> <td><a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F3874.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">tCount</a><br>Displays number of users online. </td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td align="left"><div align="center"><b>CGI & Perl</b></div></td> <td><a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F23472.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">QuickDownload</a><br>A digital file download script. </td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td align="left"><div align="center"><b>ASP.NET</b></div></td> <td> <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F48248.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">Cold Portal</a><br>CFML based portal system.</td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#e9e9e9"> <td align="left"><div align="center"><b>CFML</b></div></td> <td> <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fhotscripts.com%2FDetailed%2F36100.html&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">TransZoom</a><br>Image Slides with zoom out effect. </td> </tr> </table> <br> <table width="400" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="20"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_left.gif" width="20" height="27"></td> <td width="380" background="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_bg.gif" class="titlebars"><strong>PHP</strong></td> </tr> </table> <p><strong>eval'ing JSON</strong><em> by George Jempty of <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.htmatters.net&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">htmatters.net</a></em></p> <p>One Javascript technology being used alongside of AJAX is JSON: "Javascript Object Notation". Well-formed JSON amounts to a Javascript associative array literal:<br> <br><font face="Courier"> {<br> org: 'http://www.JSON.org',<br> copyright: '(c)2005 JSON.org',<br> license: 'http://www.crockford.com/JSON/license.html'<br> }</font></p> <p>Besides strings, a JSON block can contain numbers, and even ordered and associative array literals. Unfortunately the above block, as contents of a file, would be inaccessible to HTML-embedded Javascript via the script tags "src" attribute. The solution recommended on <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.json.org&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">json.org</a> is to use eval(), e.g.:</p> <p><font face="Courier">var myObject = eval('(' + aJSONtext + ')');</font></p> <p> This is needlessly slow and insecure. If instead an identifier, which server-side parsers could simply ignore, were optionally prepended to the object literal block, then JSON could become not just another data exchange format, but a tool for "declarative" client-server web programming. To that end I propose a new standard, JSON++. </p> <table width="400" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="20"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_left.gif" width="20" height="27"></td> <td width="380" background="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_bg.gif" class="titlebars">JavaScript </td> </tr> </table> <p><strong>SQLite </strong><em>by Saleh Jamal of <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.phpsimplicity.com&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">phpsimplicity.com<br> <br> </a></em> <p>One of the new features of PHP5 is the new SQL engine, SQLite. What makes SQLite so special is that you dont need to have a server installed like MySQL or PostgreSQL. All you need is PHP and the SQLite library enabled! </p> <p>With SQLite, all you need is a binary file which will be created by SQLite engine automatically once you try to open a connection with a non-existing DB (i.e. the binary file). This makes SQLite Databases very easy to backup and restore since you are dealing with a normal file. Now you might think that DB's are easy to exploit via URLs and you are right in that! If you create the DB in the public directory and someone found out about its location, he can exploit it and even download it! </p> <p>But there is a solution for that and that is by creating the DB in the root directory in the same level where the public directory exists. (e.g. /home/usr/ instead of /home/usr/public_html/) </p> <p>SQLite supports most of the SQL92 features which makes it just wonderful. And thats not all! SQLite library is under the public domain license which means that you can use it, source or binary, in any project you have! More about this engine can be found at <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sqlite.org%2F&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">SQLite.org</a> and at the <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.php.net%2Fsqlite&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">PHP Library.</a> </p> <table width="400" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="20"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_left.gif" width="20" height="27"></td> <td width="380" background="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_bg.gif" class="titlebars">ColdFusion</td> </tr> </table> <p><strong>ColdFusionMX7 Servlet Development <em></em></strong><em>by George Jempty of <a href="http://newsletter.inetinteractive.com/link.php?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.htmatters.net&EncryptedMemberID=ODg1NA%3D%3D&CampaignID=1&CampaignStatisticsID=1&Demo=0&Email=php...@li...">htmatters.net </a></em></p> <p>Did you know you can develop Java servlets using ColdFusion MX? I found it easiest to start by enabling ColdFusion "standalone" mode, which however, may not be the best practice. The following assumes you installed ColdFusion under windows, to the default "CFusionMX7" directory:</p> <p>Modify "<span class="style1">C:\CFusionMX7\runtime\servers\coldfusion\SERVER-INF\jrun.xml</span>". Near the bottom, in the block captioned "Built-in JRun Web Server", ensure the following is set:</p> <p class="style1"><attribute name="deactivated">false</attribute></p> <p>This enables ColdFusion locally at: http://localhost:8500</p> <p>Now, just long-established servlet configuration and development follows. ColdFusion's servlet functionality lies within "<span class="style1">C:\CFusionMX7\runtime\lib\jrun.ja</span>r" so specify it on the class path when compiling. Put your compiled servlet class in "<span class="style1">C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\WEB-INF\classes</span>". Add the appropriate "<span class="style1">servlet</span>" and "servlet-mapping" blocks to "<span class="style1">C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\WEB-INF\web.xml</span>", in particular specifying a url-pattern beginning with "/servlets/". Restart ColdFusion and your servlet should be available at a URL such as:</p> <p class="style1">http://localhost:8500/servlets/CfmxServletDemo</p> <p>In months to come we will explore WHY you might want to develop servlets under ColdFusion MX. </p><table width="400" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="20"><img src="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_left.gif" width="20" height="27"></td> <td width="380" background="http://www.hotscripts.com/newsletter/images2/bar_bg.gif" class="titlebars">HotScripts Newsletter ***Subscriber Only*** Special</td> </tr> </table> <p>Until September 20, 2005 we have three HotScripts promotions available to Newsletter subscribers ONLY.
