If I'm understanding the feature request thread correctly, appending .ics isn't really a requirement. But it would allow you to stick other files in the same directory as your calendars that weren't calendars. It could sort of count as a security measure, since the .ics is added by the code, rather than the user's request. And I wouldn't have to worry about other files being accessed. The Apple iCal format support would not be affected by allowing access to files that didn't end in .ics, since those files are identified differently.
