Not so.  I have several calendars that are stored on a WebDAV server
(actually a Subversion autoversioning repository) and Sunbird will allow
for multi-user authoring without a hitch.  It grabs the current version
of the calendar before each commit thereby keeping changes made by other
users.

Sunbird is cross-platform also.
