Greetings all -- I am new to this list, which doesn't seem to be very active lately, but hopefully someone will read and answer my mail. My name is Laura Eaves and last year (believe it or not) I embarked on my own project to do just what PHPGedView appears to have done already. After working a year on my website -- which is implemented with PHP and mysql -- a friend sent me an email yesterday about this group. I went and read all your info and have decided to put aside what I was doing and join your group. Even though I lost a year of work, I do not regret what I accomplished on my site, which is not finished by any means -- in the process I learned a lot about php and web programming, which may make it possible for me to contribute to this project technically as time goes on. As for my background, I was a math and computer science major back in the 80s and worked a number of years as a software developer, but have been a home body for several years now. I am the person in charge of setting up a website for the Eaves Family National Association, and after some discussion, concluded that something php based that would work with paf and gedcom files would be most useful. When I came upon your project, what a surprise it was that what you have done is exactly what I envisioned. I can't believe I didn't find it before, but I was not subscribed to sourceforge and just didn't hear about it. Obviously you being 12 or more people can accomplish more in 5 years than 1 person can in 1 year...:) Anyway, I should mention that I am legally blind -- ad in fact lately I am no longer able to see the computer screen and so use a screen reader to do my work. (For the uninitiated, a screen reader is software that allows a blind person to navigate the screen with the keyboard and the software speaks what is on the screen. It also can control a refreshable braille display device for those who use braille.) Because of the blindness issue, I am wondering if you have other blind users on the list and whether your user interface is accessible -- that is, compatible with the major screen readers on the market... Since the interface is generated by php I assume it is accessible, as php is usually not used in interfaces that contain animations and other features that trip up my software. I have been trying to get to a place where I can download phpgedview but so far my browser is blocking the download. Is there a simple way to download the latest release? I am so anxious to take a look at it! Anyway, that's my intro! Hope to year from others on the list! --le |
