Me too...  My gedcom file is abt 5Mb running on a 750 Mhz 258Mb weber server
with little else running.
before your index, it took a good 30 minutes (not seconds) to see the
welcome page.
now it is down to 15 seconds for the welcome page.
tnx for your help.

Obviously, I could use some more tuning.
I'm looking into some kind of php - precompiling tho it appears beyond by
expertese.  See
