In my one name studies, I always keep GoogleEarth open, mostly because it's the easiest way to grab county names. But it also helps to see where various towns are in relation to each other. The GoogleMaps does this much better, so there are times when I really need to toggle it on or off.
Even apart from my specialized needs, some users would like it, some wouldn't. They should have the choice. I really can't imagine that it would take *that* much to bypass the GoogleMaps logic in the code with a toggle. Deactivating it doesn't actually save page load time does it? It looks to me like it just hides the display of the map.
As for ResearchAssistant, why should I have to reinstall to deactivate it? The only way to know if you like it enough to keep it around, is to commit to it forever, right?

You don't have to reinstall anything to deactivate Research Assistant. You have two other options:
1 - simple delete the file research_assistant.php from the /modules folder. You can delete the research assistant folder as well, but it isn't necessary.
2 - go to 'Manage GEDCOMS and edit Privacy' - 'Privacy file' - 'edit'. Change the setting for "Show Research Assistant"

Maps already has a 'deactivate' option at the top of its page.
In my view these features you either use or you don't. If you don't then simply don't install them.
GoogleMaps in particular takes some considerable effort to use effectively - not a process appropriate for turning on/off at a whim.
