There was a Dr. Dobb's Journal article that showed how to abstract the functionality for Google, Yahoo, and other mapping services into your own API. Much rather have a list of mapping providers. Maybe links to geocaching.com for latitude, longitude, altitude.

while i can agree, on the basis of not being tied to one provider for this functionality, i feel that i must point out that ALL the other services provide very much less quality images than google maps in 99% of the cases/instances i've reviewed... i'm speaking from the point of a ~25000+ individuals and 9800+ families GEDCOM position... i've tried all of the PGV 4.1.5rel views of these coordinates and have been summarily disappointed with the result of each and every one except for the maps.google results... the worst of which seems to be the m$ terraserver stuff which insists on plastering copyright/add stuff all over the images... the basic point of this reply is that maps.google has provided the clearest and "deepest" images in all cases i've reviewed (over 10000) :?

FWIW: no, i'm not a google "fan", employee, or "status builder"... i speak from pure and absolute results... if that really means anything :?
