There is what looks like a design flaw with media linking.

Once an uploaded media item has been linked to an individual, it dissapears from the "find media" window list of items available for other individuals to link to.

Not great ergonomics for someone who want to link a group photograph to multiple individuals

Unless I've misunderstood you, this seems correct behaviour.

Media files are linked to media objects.
Media objects are linked to individuals.

The first time you use a photo, you need to add a media object (and then link a file to it).

Subsequently, you need to link to an existing media object (rather than create a new one).

If a file is not in the list, it is because it is already linked to another media object, and you should be linking to that object, rather than creating a new one.

Hi - I guess there is a conceptual confusion about media objects vs media files - to me & I suspect most other laypeople these would appear to be interchangeable terms. I think there is danger of frustration and confusion, if not another reason to give up entirely (as ALL my relatives have done) inherent if PhPGEDview relys on such distinctions being clear to non database jargon users

All terminology aside, I am not sure that it is very friendly to make the user jump through two entirely different set of hoops to locate and access images that might be relevant in thier current context, merely because some happen to be already linked while others are not. I think the user should be as far as possible shielded from such logistcal obstacles , and should have all data within easy lookup of the individual's current page - i.e. without navigating away to locate anything

What I want is to be able to do when editing an individul is to be able to browse through all the images already uploaded - whether linked already or not, and to link which ever of them I want to my current individual.
I want to be able to sort the list of available media items (link & unlinked) either via thumbnail, via the path name, or by any existing linkage references (if any) to those images, in order to more rapidly home in on images that are likely to be relevant to my current individual

Hopefully some of that makes sense?

    Cheers

    Paul,

I have to say, it took me a while to get my head around the distinction too(!).
However, I think this ought to be a feature request, rather than a bug.

I guess we need to go through all the pages that handle media objects/files and agree how we'd like them all to work instead.

There's probably more to change than appears at first glance.
