It would be neat if there was a block that would pull "On this Day in History" news from wikipedia or some other source. I would love to display a block like this next to my block showing what happened in my family on a given day.

Not a bad idea. I have something similar on my Joomla front-end. It displays a block of "Family Events" pulled from PGV, and another of "Historic Events". The latter has its own database though, rather than pulling data from wikipedia or similar. Do you know of a site you could pull the data from? It would need to vary according to the countries you have people from. For example, I would be mainly interested in UK events, not American.
However, another thought for you. Are you aware of PGVs existing "Historic Events" option? It adds historic events on each individuals "Indivudual Facts & Details" tab, in the right place among their own life events. You can see an example on my site at:
I really like the information contained in the wikipedia homepage. It is general but relevant. I actually partially solved this problem by using the html block on my welcome page and inserting some "free" code from other "This day in history" sites (specifically http://nickeysurf.com/postcards/today-in-history.html\) although there are others. It kind of works, the information could be better. It doesn't look like any of the other sites that offer free code to be inserted into a website allow the user to select the country. I'm not sure how that could be solved.
I'll check out the built in features of phpgedview that you recommended. Thanks.

What about using the histo.xx.php file?
Then you could control what is available by editing that file.
